Push to build out maritime sector

Government is working to build out a new niche market to benefit the island through the introduction of the Maritime and Underwater Heritage Bill.

The legislation was before the Lower House of Parliament, with Minister of Tourism and International Transport, Ian Gooding-Edghill leading off Debate.

The Act provides for the protection, management, sustainable development and regulation of maritime and underwater heritage in Barbados along with the advancement of sustainable maritime heritage tourism.

It also regulates all ocean mineral activities.

Mr. Gooding-Edghill says the legislation addresses deficiencies identified in a recent audit by the International Maritime Organisation.

He notes Government is mindful it has to manage its maritime sector and adds that within the legislation is the protection of lighthouses.
