Close to $3 million paid out to fisherfolk

Opposition Leader, Ralph Thorne has called attention to the treatment of the members of the fishing community, some of whom he says are still awaiting promised assistance following the passage of Hurricane Beryl.

He pleaded for Government to fulfil its promise saying he has been in regular contact with fisherfolk.

However in response, Minister of the Environment and National Beautification, Adrian Forde says close to three million dollars has been paid out by Government to Barbadian fisherfolk impacted by the passage of Hurricane Beryl.

Providing an update, he says to date, $2,750,000 was paid out.

Payments have also been made to over 100 vendors.

While admitting there were some challenges to work out, including those having problems with bank accounts, Minister Forde says Government is continuing the payment process.

Mr. Forde reassured fisherfolk that Government wants to see the revival of the fishing industry.

He says over 40 boats have since been repaired.
