Over $1.2M in non-contributory benefits paid to PWDs

A total of one million, two hundred and sixteen thousand dollars in non-contributory benefits has been paid to those within the disabled community. This is according to Minister of Labour Colin Jordan. He was speaking ahead of the passing of the Rights of Persons with Disabilities Act, 2024. He says in October 2024, 464 people benefitted; of which 291 were minors and 173 were adults.

Renewed focus placed on drug prevention

As renewed focus is being placed on drug prevention this Drug Awareness Month. The National Council on Substance Abuse, says substance abuse is a public health issue and must be treated as such. Deputy Manager, Troy Wickham says it’s not solely a matter for the judiciary and everyone must play a part in combating the issue. He says research over the years has shown persons as early as seven years have been exposed to a substance at least once in their lifetime. This he says is occurring in the home, from friends or family members. Mr. Wickham was a guest on CBC TV8’s Mornin’ Barbados. Mr. Wickham says education is critical to enlightening Barbadians of the dangers along with collaboration with its partners.

Water issues at Hillaby Turner’s Hall resolved

The second term of 2024 got off to a smooth start for thousands of students and teachers, even though one primary school had to be closed early due to lack of water. This update is coming from Deputy Chief Education Officer Julia Beckles who explained there was a difficulty with a valve on water tank at Hillaby Turner’s Hall. Ms. Beckles says the matter at Hillaby Turner’s Hall has been resolved and classes will resume at that institution this morning. She thanks students, parents, staff and other stakeholders for their patience and understanding.
