Barbados warns of doomsday scenario due to rising seas

Barbados has warned of a doomsday scenario for millions of inhabitants of the Caribbean due to rising sea levels, telling the Organisation of American States the matter demands urgent policy responses. Permanent Representative, Ambassador Victor Fernandes cited increases in sea level recorded over the last decade and the impact on coasts of countries in the region, as he addressed a special meeting of the OAS Permanent Council on the consequences and legal implications of sea level rise. Ambassador Fernandes advised the OAS that difficult but necessary conversations must be held on the way forward. Ambassador Fernandes adds that access to long term financing, as outlined in the Bridgetown Initiative, is critical.

Significant reduction in fires

The Barbados Fire Service has seen a significant reduction in fires. Acting Chief Fire Officer Henderson Patrick says overall fire calls at this point in time when compared to the same period last year, are down by 200. He made the revelation while speaking to CBC News. The Acting Chief says the favourable reduction is a result of weather conditions as well as an increasing number of Barbadians taking fire safety measures seriously.

New elements added to Richard Stoute Teen Talent

New elements have been added to this year’s Richard Stoute Teen Talent competition. Technical Officer Randy Eastmond says two lucky contestants will be awarded the Richard Stoute Award and the Spouge Award. He says while there’s been a marked increase in patronage, he wants the public to attend the final rounds of competition, which are set to feature live bands.
