Colonial past linked to delay in states becoming republic

A local historian has tied the strength of colonial and imperial bonds in the Commonwealth Caribbean to the delay in states moving towards becoming republics.

Senior Lecturer in the Department of History and Philosophy at the University of the West Indies, Dr. Henderson Carter linked the move to Prime Minister Mia Amor Mottley’s leadership and her embrace of countries of Africa.

He was at the time participating in a webinar on ‘Republicanism in the Commonwealth Caribbean’ hosted by the University of the West Indies.
