More investment in climate-smart agricultural facilities

Barbados intends to ramp up investments in more climate-smart agricultural facilities.

This is according to Prime Minister Mia Amor Mottley.

She says this will be necessary as the climate crisis and new pests impact open-field farming, and new wars and conflicts and supply chain challenges drive up prices.

Prime Minister Mottley says with land in limited supply in Barbados, the country must utilise more vertical farming, as opposed to the traditional approach to agriculture.

She was speaking during a signing ceremony with the Inter-American Development Bank for a US $40 million loan.

It will be used to fund the Barbados Climate Resilient South Coast Water Reclamation Project, which aims to enhance water supply resilience.

Meanwhile, President of the IDB, Ilan Goldfajn says the new facility is expected to double water availability in the coming decades.
