Call for reduced retirement age for certain workers

The Congress of Trade Unions and Staff Associations of Barbados (CTUSAB) is calling for a reduction in the retirement age for nurses, prison officers, police and firefighters.

President Ryan Phillips says adjusting the retirement age, currently 67, for these categories of workers is a significant step to alleviating burnout and rectifying shortages within the workforce.

He was addressing a media conference, where he stated the Congress’ intention to submit a formal resolution to Government on the proposed earlier retirement age for members of the Protective Services and nurses in the public healthcare system.

Mr. Phillips further explains that as nurses and workers in the Protective Services grow older, their ability to meet rigorous physical requirements naturally declines.
