Government is working to position Barbados as a global hub for research and development. Prime Minister Mia Amor Mottley says Barbados has been intentional in crafting an enabling tax and policy framework to assist in this regard. Ms. Mottley’s comments came at the launch of the Global Innovation Index 2024 by the World Intellectual Property Organisation.
A Flash-Flood Watch is in effect for parts of St. Thomas, St. James and St. Peter. This alert is issued when heavy or excessive rainfall in a short period of time (generally less than 6 hours) could result in flash flooding within the watch area. It does not mean that flooding will occur, but it is possible. Light winds and daytime heating are generating cloudy skies and showers across some central, western and northwestern districts and the BMS has issued a flash flood watch. Rainfall accumulation between 1 and 2 inches is possible this afternoon, with an improvement expected overnight. Take note of the possible moderate to significant impacts:-Runoff from higher elevations-Soil erosion on exposed or scarred land surfaces-Water settlements on roads and fields at the foot of hills and coastal roads-Adjustments to water levels of existing water bodies (ponds etc.)-Objects or debris from higher elevations becoming embedded within fast-moving water flows-Delays on traffic routes with some roads becoming impassable in and out of minor towns-Residents and visitors should also be aware that this alert level could elevate to red. The public is encouraged to monitor the BMS, DEM and GIS websites and their respective social media pages along with the local media networks for further updates. This Flash Flood Watch was issued at 1.30 pm Sunday, 29th September 2024 and will be terminated at 6 pm Sunday, 29th September 2024 or sooner if conditions warrant.
By Paradise Afshar, CNN (CNN) — Actor Drake Hogestyn, known for his role as John Black on the soap opera “Days of Our Lives,” has died following a battle with cancer, his family announced on Saturday. He was 70 years old. “It’s with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of Drake Hogestyn. He was thrown the curve ball of his life when he was diagnosed with pancreatic cancer, but he faced the challenge with incredible strength and determination,” reads a statement from the Hogestyn family, which was posted to the Days of Our Lives Instagram account. “After putting up an unbelievable fight, he passed peacefully surrounded by loved ones.” Other news outlets, including Variety and the Hollywood Reporter, have also reported his passing. The family’s statement describes Hogestyn as the “most amazing husband, father, papa, and actor,” and highlighted his love of performing for the “Days of Our Lives” audience and working with the show’s cast, crew and production team. “We love him and we will miss him all the Days of Our Lives,” the statement said. Hogestyn made his “Days of Our Lives” debut in 1986 and appeared in more than 4,200 episodes, according to IMDb. His work on the long-running soap opera earned him Soap Opera Digest Award wins in 1994 and 1995 for hottest male star, and another win in 2005 for favorite couple.
