Teen remanded for murder

The Barbados Police Service’s Criminal Investigations Department (District ‘A’) arrested and formally charged a teenager for a recent murder. He is 19-year-old Shem Jarad Mullin of Denton Road, Grazettes, St Michael, who was charged with the murder of Michael Hutson on September 18, 2024. Mullin appeared before Magistrate Alison Burke of the District ‘A’ Traffic Court today, Tuesday, September 24, 2024, and has been remanded to the Barbados Prison Service (Dodds). He is scheduled to reappear on Wednesday, October 23, 2024, at the District ‘A’ Magistrate’s Court.

UWI to conduct National Survey on Literacy

A National Survey on Literacy is to be conducted by the University of the West Indies at Cave Hill. It will be undertaken during the months of October and November. The purpose of the survey is to assess literacy skills, including reading, writing, listening, and speaking, and to gather opinions on attitudes towards literacy and how literacy impacts personal, workplace, and professional development. The survey will be conducted across all parishes, and households will be randomly selected to participate. Participation is voluntary, and all information collected will remain confidential. The input of the public will contribute to an important national effort, aimed at improving literacy education for all Barbadians.

Man remanded on arson & other charges

A 23-year-old man, who was wanted in connection with serious criminal matters, has been remanded to prison, following a court appearance for several offences. He is Adrian Lamar Beckles of no fixed placed of abode. Beckles has been charged with: Assault Occasioning Actual Bodily Harm – of Ian Bennett Arson – the dwelling house belonging to Adrian Bayne Arson – the dwelling house belonging to Isua Bayne Criminal Damage – the motor vehicle belonging to Carrington Estate Limited Beckles appeared before Magistrate Bernadeth John of the District ‘C’ Magistrates Court on Tuesday, September 17, 2024 and was remanded to Dodds. He is scheduled to reappear on Thursday, October 17, 2024.
