Calls for enforcement of local building codes

As we get deeper into the hurricane season, we are hearing calls from a leading engineer for minimum building standards to be enforced. It’s coming from from Lieutenant Colonel Trevor Browne. He says the Barbados National Standards Institution has already established a Building Code for engineers in Barbados. Referring to the new sugarcrete technology, Lieutenant Colonel Browne says there is no need to introduce a new experimental technology when the material used in the region is adequate.

Fisherfolk facing a choppy fishing season

Fishermen are in a race against time. The fishing season is scheduled to start in November and more than half the complement of boats are still on dry dock and not ready for the high seas. When a CBC News crew visited the Bridgetown Fisheries Complex on the Princess Highway today it was a hive of activity, with fisherfolk saying there is a glimmer of hope. Trevor Thorpe reports.

Outreach programme coming for local artistes

An outreach programme for local artistes is coming. That’s according to Chief Executive Officer of COSCAP, Erica Smith. She was speaking at a prize-giving ceremony at the Wyndham Grand Barbados Resort yesterday. Ms. Smith says the initiative is coming off the momentum gained from this year’s Crop Over Festival. Trevor Thorpe has the story.
