BPWCCUL assisting young and mature students

Scholarships offered to young people by the Barbados Public Workers’ Co-operative Credit Union Limited (BPWCCUL) are about empowering the next generation of members. The revelation from Secretary to the Board of Directors, Irene Sandiford-Garner. She addressed the organisation’s scholarship awards ceremony at the Union’s headquarters last evening. Afreximbank to build state-of-the-art trade centre in Barbados

A state-of-the-art trade centre is to be built by African Export-Import, Afreximbank  in Barbados. The project, the Barbados African Trade Centre, has gone out to tender with the release of the Expressions of Interest. The area identified is the Carlisle Bay district. Afreximbank says the mixed-use complex will sit on a 6.4-acre piece of land. The trade centre will comprise Afreximbank Caribbean regional offices, corporate office space, a 120-room hotel, conference, exhibition and business incubation centre. Qualified firms have until January 31, to make submissions.

UPDATE: Police identify victim in shooting death

The Barbados Police Service has identified the man who lost his life in a shooting incident at Checker Hall Cross Road, St. Lucy on Thursday, January 9. He is 30-year-old Vere Ricardo Hoyte of Isolation Road, Belleplaine, St Andrew. The Service noted in a press release that police at the District ‘E’ Police Station received a report around 5:00 p.m. that a male was shot at Checker Hall Cross Road, St. Lucy: “Police personnel responded and our investigations so far revealed that the now deceased Vere Ricardo Hoyte 30 years of Isolation Road, Belleplaine, St Andrew was liming in the area when a motor vehicle stopped close by. A series of gunshots were heard, and he was seen lying on the ground. Medical attention was summoned and he was later pronounced dead at the scene by a medical doctor. “The Barbados Police Service (TBPS) is appealing to anyone who can provide any information pertaining to this incident, to kindly contact the Criminal Investigations Department (District ‘E’), at 422-0813 or 419-1737, Police emergency at 211, Crime Stoppers at 1-800-TIPS (8477) or any Police Station.”
